Announcing Ravi Avasti’s Summa, our final residency project for 2024. Temporary closure from today.
|
Today, we’re excited to introduce Ravi Avasti and his project, Summa, our final residency project for the year, from 21 September until 21 December.
Ravi’s practice spans installation, sculpture, and drawing. His work examines the relations between body/self and the temporal/spatial nature of the world and its phenomena, both naturally occurring and human-made—what he calls the 'rhythms and sparkles of his environment'. Through site-based making, exhibition, and conversation with the public and correspondences' Emma Thomson, Summa draws together several threads of thematic interest for Ravi, from theoretical physics to electronics, robotics, the secret life of trees, and mundane household items like the digital alarm clock—all of which connect with his touching, playful, sometimes downright humorous search for the ineffable. Please read on to learn more about Ravi’s project and planned activities. Several more exciting events will be announced next month.
Thank you to all of you who joined us for the closing weekend of Ali McCann’s project, Return to SOCIAL. A few pictures are below. In the fruitfulness of time, we look forward to sharing news of the release of our long-form interview with Ali, completed as part of this special project. Congratulations, Ali. Today, our doors close for a few weeks to undertake some exciting studio research overseas. If you have a sales inquiry or an urgent matter you would like to discuss during this time, please get in touch with us at info@correspondences.work, and we will respond as soon as possible. Otherwise, we can’t wait to see you when we reopen officially on Saturday, 21 September, with Ravi Avasti/Summa. Upcoming projects/exhibitionsRavi Avasti / Summa 21 September ––21 December 2024
ineffable causing so much emotion, especially pleasure, that it cannot be described: ineffable joy/beauty
From 21 September until 21 December 2024, resident artist Ravi Avasti will present his residency project.
Ravi’s practice spans installation, sculpture, and drawing. His work examines the relations between body/self and the temporal and spatial nature of the world and its phenomena, naturally occurring and human-made—what he calls the 'rhythms and sparkles of his environment'.
The project title, Summa, references a period each year in Ravi’s studio practice when he reviews recent work and exhibitions and produces documentation of the works. Given the considerable energy involved in reviewing projects that have already been a significant undertaking, this time is balanced with playful experimentation and the development of ongoing concepts.
This year, Ravi will undertake his Summa at correspondences. He will reflect upon, represent and respond to significant bodies of historical work via a series of site-responsive installations in three parts. ––Part 1: The first instalment will feature Cherry Exposures (2019-), an ongoing series of temporary images created by exposing timber to ultraviolet light, and Art Market—Hotel Drawing Series (2016-), a continuing series of small postcard-sized pen drawings made during hotel stays while travelling and left behind as an offering that reaches beyond the art market. ––Part 2: The second instalment will feature a re-installation of Ravi’s recent exhibition at Stockroom Kyneton, Human Acts (2024), featuring ‘chair-like’ timber sculptures. Lovingly arranged in dialogue with one another, the installation continues Ravi's exploration of the human condition, the role of art, and the chair as a symbol of dialogue. During this part, Ravi will also return to his ongoing project involving creating drawings from high-resolution 3D scans of small areas of the ground, Loop 1 (2015-16), alongside a new drawing series in progress from working in situ, an extension of this Art Market - Hotel Drawing Series (2016-) and his ongoing Inclusion (2015-) series, which represent tree branches as evidence of inclusion and exclusion. ––Part 3: The final instalment will feature The Current Time as the Value of Light From a Seven Segment Display (2019), a playful non-linear iteration of the current time using light as a medium. Alongside this, Ravi will show a new series of maquettes based on the sculptures from Human Acts (2024), a finalised group of site-based drawings from his time at correspondences and his latest research into a series of mechanical flowers that bloom in response to warmth, rain, wind, etc. Through site-based making, exhibition and conversation with the public and correspondences’ curator, Emma Thomson, Summa draws together several threads of thematic interest from theoretical physics to electronics, robotics and the secret life of trees and mundane household items like the digital alarm clock – all of which connect with Ravi’s touching, playful, sometimes downright humorous search for the ineffable. Head to the Upcoming special events & activities section below to learn more about activities planned and to book. More details on special events will be released in due course.
