Thank you for joining us this past month to sing, paint, meditate, look, read, listen to poetry and music, or gather for conversation.
In May, our project سخن دل Sokhaneh del—language/speech enters into its final month with its examination of the idea of ‘devotion’ or, more rightly, samimiyat صمیمیت, its widened meaning in the Persian-speaking world and, as inspired by the poetry of beloved thirteenth-century master Maulana Jalal al-Din (Maulana)/Rumi.
Next week, we install Part 3 of the project (opening Thursday, 9 May), The path to samimiyat صمیمیت, focusing on new installations of music, poetry, mixed-media works on paper and painting. Aarti will continue to explore new developments in her community singing practice and experiment with environmental sound studies from the residency at correspondences.
Inbal will showcase new paintings from her recent residency at DESA in Ubud, Indonesia, and a new painting born from her community painting experience that explores and enlarges upon the tender marks that her audience made with her. Alongside this will be her large-scale ink painting on rice paper, specifically commissioned for the project, and new developments in her drawing practice, working with pencil and charcoal.
Javad will show their fifteen mixed-media works on paper, inspired by fifteen poems by Maulana/Rumi and their examination of the idea of samimiyat صمیمیت, specially commissioned and made for the project.
The project's culmination will be an improvised dance response by esteemed dancer Janette Hoe on Sunday, 2 June, whose response will extend the project's examination of samimiyat into the realm of dance.
The invitation to dance is a gesture that seeks to acknowledge Maulana/Rumi's passionate commitment to the practice of sama or whirling, which, together with music and silence, he saw as the pathway to samimiyat.
Next week, we'll share more about Janette and her plans for this invitation, which will draw from the project's many rich layers and threads and her own practice and ideas. Save the date for this special occasion.
In the meantime, we warmly invite you to join us this month for our final sessions of community singing with Aarti and our poetry reading/listening circle with Javad.
Javad will also join us on Saturday, 11 May from 2:00-4:00 pm for an open studio session onsite. We invite you to join them in making and learning about the Farsi language and the art form of calligraphy featured in their works. No booking is necessary.
