I have always been interested in natural phenomena such as fog, wind, light, and shadow, articulating almost invisible forms in my work and praising simple yet deeply rich 'in-between' spaces.

This Friday, 3 March, we are thrilled to welcome ceramist/installation artist Yoko Ozawa to correspondences for her residency project, Yoko Ozawa: Yohaku (blank space).

Upcoming projects/exhibitionsFrom 3 March until 27 May 2023, resident artist Yoko Ozawa will present her three-month residency project on-site, Yoko Ozawa: Yohaku (blank space). Inspired by a lifelong interest in natural phenomena, including seasonal transitions, fog, breeze, rain, light and shadow, the project examines nature and the body, the interconnectedness of objects and the everyday human experience of spirituality and place.
Featuring eight installations to be staged weekly, culminating in a final exhibit on 5 May, the installations will showcase new ceramic works to explore the relationships between water reflection, plants, vessels, materiality, sound and the body through the Japanese notion of ‘yohaku’ (blank space), Ozawa's central preoccupation. Each week on-site, Yoko will also be working on her calligraphy and haiku practice. Fragments may set her intentions for the next installation or find their way into the work in other ways, paying homage to these venerable traditions that have long fascinated the artist.
Like her innovative ceramics, Yoko aims to experiment with these traditions, searching for new meanings and connections: '… I'm free to create anything, and it is not necessary to follow such an admirable tradition. Yet, I have been searching for where my work fits into culture,' she says.
The first installation will reflect upon fallen leaves, the emotional (re)awakening of the senses we experience as we shift into the autumnal season. It is conceived as a re-contextualisation of an earlier installation, 木枯し Kogarashi – The first cold wind blew (pictured above), presented at Craft in 2021.
The installation will also connect with Ozawa's exhibition for NGV Melbourne Now, opening on 24 March, which we invite you to explore with us in April's Art Walk planned.
During the residency, we'll also explore several fascinating cross-disciplinary collaborations and complementary programs through on-site audience programming.
The opening event next Sunday, 5 March, Genevieve Fry & Esala Liyanage: In search of blank space / A sonic response to the work of Yoko Ozawa, is presented as part of the 2023 Brunswick Music Festival.
Incorporating installation, harp, synth, recorder and percussion, the performance is born from a shared passion for water reflection and a lifelong interest in natural phenomena.
In April/May, we will be exploring haiku and several exciting works of Japanese literature through a guest writer/speaker amongst other exciting things to be announced soon. Watch this space!
