Upcoming projects/exhibitionsReturn to SOCIAL Featuring Ali McCann 24 July ––17 August 2024 In Return to SOCIAL, artist Ali McCann revisits her performance SOCIAL, presented as part of her 2022 residency at correspondences, which extended her longstanding inquiry into nostalgia and the aesthetics of pedagogy into the realm of science, sound and performance, bringing to life Ali’s lifelong interest in space and the intersections between art and science. Conceived with her childhood friend, musician/composer Mat Watson, SOCIAL was inspired by the artists’ shared adolescent experience in Stawell, their hometown in regional Victoria, where the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory searches for proof of dark matter in our universe. Encompassing tableau vivant, installation and performance, SOCIAL examined the elusive age of adolescence and the interconnecting idea of apophenia (the human tendency to find connections or patterns between random information), the way this phenomenon shapes how we remember places and spaces and how much of them we forget or imagine. Return to SOCIAL examines the performance archive in two parts. Part 1 features an installation of sound, objects, images, video documentation, and an interview/conversation project. Part 2 features an exhibition of new still-life photographs drawn from connections and patterns found in the archive, memory and imagination, reality and illusion. A range of community events are planned. For further information, read
