We’re open & showing Harmonious Eccentricity, featuring Emma Ovenden & Elyss McCleary. Plus, BMF & Sydney Road Street Party! We’re delighted today to have opened the first week of exhibitions for our inaugural project for the year, Harmonious Eccentricity.
This collaborative residency project features live music, improvisation, video, quilting and beading practice by musician/composer/visual artist Emma Ovenden and painting by visual artist Elyss McCleary. The project is presented over six weeks and features five different displays.
The first week focuses on Emma’s practice. It features music, a selection of quilts, beaded drawings (complete and in progress), and a video the artist made in response to one of her songs from her sublime album Parameter (Part I and II). Alongside the exhibitions, community-making and a range of events have been planned. We have a multilingual poetry reading circle, a collage workshop (and three self-guided sessions), an opening celebration, a conversation with the artists and two live performances by Emma - one presented as the culmination of the residency in partnership with Brunswick Music Festival (BMF). The stunning painting Octet Loves Nine Again 2022, by Elyss, pictured above, inspired the title for Emma’s upcoming BMF performance and will be shown in week three of the project.
We’re eternally grateful to BMF and Arts Merri-Bek for supporting our involvement in BMF and Sydney Road Street Party (SRSP) 2024 and our broader programming.
As part of SRSP and our Writers-In-Conversation program, we are delighted to welcome Naarm/Melbourne-based writer, artist, and photographer Sarah Walker back to correspondences on Sunday, 3 March - this time to talk about her award-winning book The First Time I Thought I Was Dying.
