COVID-19 Safe Plan Requirements:

  • Admission is free, but we ask you to RSVP for a time visit via the buttons below to help us get organised and comply with our COVID-19 Safe Plan. This is not mandatory but it really helps us to manage the number of people in the space at one time in line with our COVID-19 Safe Plan.

  • As a condition of entry, all visitors must wear a mask and those aged 16 years and over must present proof of COVID-19 double-dose vaccination and will need to sign in via the Victorian State Government QR Code service using a smartphone per the Chief Health Officer’s Directions.

  • In indoor spaces, capacity limits apply, and these are marked. Our invigilation team will monitor/provide guidance as needed. Please help us maintain social distancing by keeping at least 1.5 metres between you and others at all times.

  • Please stay home if you’re not feeling well.

1—Exhibit 1: Shen Jiawei
Speaker: Dr Selina Lo

  • Shen Jiawei / 沈嘉蔚 will present large-scale reproductions of three of his distinctive history paintings, featuring three significant individuals in the history of Australia being: a prominent Yuin elder; an Australian journalist and adviser to the Chinese Government; and, a prominent Sydney merchant.

  • LOCATION: Outdoor exhibit, Corner of Lygon and Little Elgin St Carlton & Virtual

  • OPENING: Friday 17/12/21 at 6:00PM

  • FEATURING: Sound installation Impressions / 印象 2020 by 陳雋然 / Chun Yin Rainbow Chan for one night. Tour the exhibition and listen to Chan’s soundscape and a keynote address by Global & planetary health justice expert 羅南芝 / Dr Selina Lo.

  • A reading of ‘Painting History’ / 绘制历史 written by 莫爾頓•金伯利 / Kimberley Moulton will be released into our online Reading Room in 2022.

  • Followed by a celebratory drink at Heart Attack and Vine Bar.

  • ACCESS: Monday-Sunday, 24 hours.

  • YUM CHA (self-funded): Saturday 18/12/21 at 11:00AM. RSVP essential.

  • WEEKEND VIEWING WITH THE CURATORS: Sunday 19 December 2021 at 10:00AM. Join us for casual coffee outdoors afterwards.

2—Exhibit 2: He Pei Pei, Kuang Zai & Jenny Zhe Chang

  • He Pei Pei / 何佩佩 will present a selection of works from Intersection 《交叉路口》and Street Melody 2020 《街之韵律》, a new series of scroll drawings, large-format oil paintings and drawings on paper that continue the artist's search into the spirit of city life at the centre of Melbourne.

  • Kuang Zai / 匡再 will present a new series of works which extend upon his long-standing inquires into family life, the everyday and the innocence and inner world of childhood across cultures. 

  • Jenny Zhe Chang / 珍妮喆张 will present Light with Hope – Rising 2021, a site-specific installation that explores the concept of conventional wisdom passed down through generations to support or nurture us during times of hardship.

  • LOCATION: Missing Persons, Room 11–12, Level 4, Nicholas Building, Swanston Street, Melbourne & Virtual.

  • OPENING: Thursday 13/1/22 6:00—9:30PM (cancelled)
    Due to the evolving COVID-19 circumstances, our opening has been cancelled. However, we will remain open late for visits this evening. During the March-May period, we will conduct a talk event with our artists. This session will explore the exhibition retrospectively alongside the release of a film and an extended virtual exhibit.

  • Four special readings by contributing writers 玛丽亚•图马金 / Maria Tumarkin, 梅剑青 / Boey Kim Cheng, 张奕霖 / Eileen Chong and 陳珈祺 / Elizabeth Tan will also be released into our online Reading Room.

  • ACCESS:

    • Thursday—1:00-8:00PM

    • Friday—Sunday 9:00AM-5:00PM.

    • Timed, free ticketed attendance. Register below.

3—Exhibit 3: Guan Wei, Fu Hong, Ouyang Yu & Echo Cai
Speaker: Jinghua Qian

  • Fu Hong / 傅红 will present a new series of work inspired by the Shan Hai Jing 2021, the ancient Chinese text. Presented online will also be his monumental painting Re-birth 2019. The exhibit continues the artist's search into the idea of the transformation in art and self.

  • Guan Wei / 关伟 will present The Metamorphosis / 变形记 2020. Presented in conversation online will also be his monumental self portrait Plastic surgery – A portrait of an immigrant artist 2015, the exhibit continues the artist’s search into the theme of self-identity and ideas of transformation, re-birth and belonging.

  • Ouyang Yu / 欧阳昱 will present Three Firsts 2021 his book installation which explores the process of self-destruction, transformation and renewal at the heart of the creative process and the migratory experience.

  • Together with collaborators Shen Zhimin / 沈志敏 and NiNi / 昵昵, Echo Cai / 子轩 will present Retracing The Great Walk / 再现淘金路 2020, a moving image work which retraces the journey Chinese immigrant workers were forced to walk from Robe in South Australia to the Victorian goldfields during the gold rush.

    Due to the evolving COVID-19 circumstances, our opening has been cancelled. However, we will remain open late for visits this evening. There will also be a special after dark reading by Ouyang Yu of excerpts from his self-published rejection Spring Waters: Li-Yu, the Emperor of Poetry.

  • Four further readings will also be released into our online Reading Room by
    許瑩玲 / Julie Koh, Ouyang Yu / 欧阳昱, 尼古拉斯•周思 / Nicholas Jose and 趙明佑 / Osmond Chiu.
