Thank you!Thank you for joining us for last weekend's special events at correspondences.
On Friday, we presented Emily Soon & Talking Vinyl, an evening of song featuring singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Emily Soon.
Emily presented a set of her original music, along with three tributes to the late great Nina Simone, Etta James and Billie Holiday, as part of our conversational forum Talking Vinyl.
Thank you, Em, for serenading us with your beautiful voice and talking openly about making, presenting and recording music in the COVID-19 age, listening to vinyl and the act of slowing down, genre-crossing and the evolution of your music, our mutual love of country twang and more besides.
It was a smashing night amongst new friends and old. We hope you can join us for our next night of song!

On Sunday, we formally kicked off our fundraising campaign, Support Ukraine's Women and Children, with our inaugural correspondences' Bookclub + Evening of Ukrainian Poetry, Philosophy and Song.
It was an honour to have the incomparable Maria Tumarkin as the first writer to talk with us about her acclaimed book Axiomatic, 2018. Thank you, dear Maria, for your incredible, singular writing, kindness, warmth and wit, which kept us all enthralled.
Afterwards, together with Maria, we co-hosted a conversation with writer, editor and translator Svitlana Yakovenko. Originally from central Ukraine, Svitlana runs Sydney-based Sova books, a speciality publisher dedicated to bringing Ukrainian culture and history to the English-speaking world.
Maria and Svitlana talked about Son of Sava: Hryhoriy Skovoroda, the Life and Legacy of the Ukrainian Philosopher, Sova Books’ forthcoming title.
|
The book explores the life and legacy of one of Ukraine's most treasured poets and philosophers, Hryhoriy Skovoroda, whose historic home in a tiny village not far from Kharkiv was recently destroyed by a Russian artillery strike, along with a museum of his work.
Svitlana's passion for Skovoroda and generous spirit truly radiated via the Zoom! Thank you, Svitlana, for all that you're doing to share Ukrainian culture with us.
Interspersed throughout the conversation was a selection of Ukrainian poems and songs, spoken and sung by Maria and her daughter Billie Tumarkin, a gifted vocalist and collaborative artist; she works in over a dozen languages from the last 500 years of classical and folk song.
Thank you, Billie, for transporting us through song - leaving us wholly spellbound and in awe of your voice, artistry - and the beauty and intense feeling of Ukrainian folk songs.
In the coming weeks, we hope to share a recording of our conversation with Svitlana. In the meantime, press the button below to join a pre-order list for Son of Sava: Hryhoriy Skovoroda, the Life and Legacy of the Ukrainian Philosopher, which will be released by Sova Books in August/September.
