Join us for our inaugural Bookclub event (3-4 pm), where we will be talking with Maria Tumarkin about her acclaimed book Axiomatic, 2018.
Stay on from 4:00 pm to join us for an evening of Ukrainian poetry, philosophy and song featuring Tumarkin, writer, editor and translator Svitlana Yakovenko of Sydney-based Sova books and vocalist and collaborative artist Billie Tumarkin (pictured). Afterwards, join us for informal drinks and conversation.
If you can only join us from 4:00pm, rather than 3:00pm, this is perfectly fine. Please do!
Event attendance on this occasion is via donation to our chuffed.org campaign in support of women and children escaping the violence of the war in Ukraine. After your contribution is received, you will receive your ticket for the book club and the evening event. Choose a "perk" for a special memento of the evening. All donations raised will be donated to the care of mothers and children escaping the violence of the war in Ukraine.
Proceedings for the afternoon/evening:
Bookclub will run from 3-4:00 pm. The session will be informal. Maria will share a brief excerpt on her experiences of writing Axiomatic 2018, followed by question time and tea. After a small break, from 4:15 pm, we will commence our evening of activities.
Together with Maria, we are thrilled to be hosting a conversation with writer, editor and translator Svitlana Yakovenko (pictured), who will be joining us via video hookup from Sydney. Originally from central Ukraine, Svitlana runs Sydney-based Sova books, a speciality publisher dedicated to bringing Ukrainian culture and history (and cuisine) to the English-speaking world.
Maria and Svitlana will be talking about Son of Sava: Hryhoriy Skovoroda, the Life and Legacy of the Ukrainian Philosopher, one of Sova Book's latest titles. The book explores the life and legacy of one of Ukraine's most treasured poets, and philosophers, Hryhoriy Skovoroda, whose historic home in a tiny village not far from Kharkiv was recently destroyed by a Russian artillery strike, along with a museum of his work.
Interspersed throughout the conversation will be a selection of Ukrainian poems and songs, spoken and sung by Maria and her daughter Billie Tumarkin (pictured), a gifted vocalist and collaborative artist; she works in over a dozen languages from the last 500 years of classical and folk song.
If you chose a print as your “perk”, your artwork be available for collection on the evening. If you chose to secure your place to attend Maria’s masterclass, you will receive an email confirmation.
Note:—The conversational part of the evening will be recorded and shared with our subscribers after the event.
