We warmly invite you to a conversation with artist Cecilia Sordi Campos as we explore her first exhibit in connection with Inciting Joyher collaborative residency project with future soul artist Tiana Khasi

This first part of the project showcases her award-winning photobook together with a selection of photographic prints and works of moving images from her 2019 project Tem Bigato Nessa Goiaba and a series of new images under development. Entitled Alegria or joy in Brazilian Portuguese, the images were made as a response to the project’s central theme, in particular, the notion of ‘joy as resistance’. They explore intersections with Tem Bigato Nessa Goiaba and take inspiration from the sounds and lyrics of Tiana’s music. Tiana’s critically acclaimed 2019 debut EP Meghalaya and her recent release, ‘As Good As It Gets’.

Press the ‘JOIN THE GUEST LIST’ button to RSVP. Attendance is free. Bookings are essential.

Cecilia is a Brazilian-born, Australia-based visual artist, writer and researcher. Her practice is positioned in the field of socially engaged art, autofiction and expanded documentary. Working with photography, biomaterials, painting, sculpture, alternative processes and moving image, her projects examine the complex experiences of womanhood and the female body, as well as migration and cultural identity. Cecilia’s work has been shown in Australia and internationally. Her work is widely published online and in print. She has been shortlisted for numerous awards. She holds a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours from RMIT University in Australia where she is a current PhD candidate.

As Cecilia writes:

My experience as a Brazilian migrant from both European and Afro-Brazilian ancestry, in concert with my experience as an infertile woman of colour with its attendant signifiers in sociocultural contexts, are central to my practice. My projects are developed through critical engagement alongside the dissecting of the intricate web of my complex cultural identity to gain access to hybrid, subjugated ways of knowing. My aesthetic expression emerges from sensory knowledge that is activated by living in an intimate, curious way. This curiosity holds the space for discovery and demands an openness to knowledge that is generated through the decoding of ethnic corporeality, thus recognising alternative world views and underrepresented perspectives as legitimate.
