This was not the artwork that I intended to make, and it is left in a seemingly unfinished state. Sometimes, as a creative, we have works that we need to make. Hopefully we have the capacity to make them, but sometimes, something will get in the way, and there isn’t anything you can do about it. It is at these times that you need to be understanding, and afford yourself the kindness that you would give to a close friend.

Allowed explores permission and kindness through delicate methods of imperfect embroidery. The work also features accompanying documentation of the making that includes every mistake and imperfection that was made throughout. Mistakes and imperfection are a part of life, and this work invites to normalise conversation around this.
Presented in connection with the exhibition ‘Can we talk about this?’ curated by Amanda Chamsay, conceived as part of the correspondences Colleagues Program.
